The Arms Sale
The United States are selling US 6.4 billion dollars worth of military weapons to Taiwan. And then this resulted in China being very angry with the Washington. Beijing suspended military exchanges with Washington and threatened to impose sanctions on the US firms involved in the transaction. This arms sale caused the relationship between the US and China to deteriorate.
Let's see why the US wanted to sell arms to Taiwan. The US claimed that they wanted to preserve the military balance between Taiwan and fast-growing China. China thinks that Taiwan is rightfully theirs and so probably wanted to invade Taiwan sooner or later. The US brought about the arms sale to strengthen Taiwan's military defences, so that China would not invade Taiwan. I think that the reason behind the reason that the US gave, was because they wanted the world to be peaceful, no invasion, no wars.
If the US did not sell arms to Taiwan, war would occur and it would be chaotic. If there is an invasion of Taiwan by China, the US would probably have to step in and most likely, side with Taiwan (because China, with bigger military strength, would invade first). If there is a war between China and USA, the 2 countries would start asking for allies, and this would most probably lead to a next World War, countries like Singapore which are very good allies of both countries will be forced to make hard decisions and choose sides.
This is like a series of chain events that eventually would lead to war. War is definitely not an ideal option so, I guess this is why the US chose to sell arms to Taiwan. The US had to pay a price to maintain peace, which is its friendship with China. In my opinion, I think that the US had made the right decision by considering the future and selling arms to Taiwan.
I think that China had acted too rashly by threatening to impose sanctions. Although China thinks that Taiwan is its own territory, China must still understand the situation the US is in. The US is portrayed as a bigger brother, by most countries. The US has an important role to play in the peace of the world. So China should control its anger, [ By the way, anger is one of the seven deadly sins =) ] and understand the US. China should not vent its anger on the US firms that took part in this arms sale, instead, as I mentioned in my previous post, they should strive for a win-win situation.
Well, to sum up my thoughts about this arms sale issue, I think that the US have made the right the right choice by bringing about this arms sale to maintain peace throughout the world and China should have more control over its anger, and had made the wrong decisions. The friendship between China and US that have been so hard to achieve would be ended by just a single dispute. Well, these are my thoughts, what about yours? Do you think the US or China have made the wrong decision? Post your comments in the tagboard!
