RacismWhat is racism? Racism is the belief that race is a primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produces an inherent superiority of a particular race. Or, on the opposite side, racism can be seen as the belief that a certain race portrays a certain, undesirable characteristics. In the case of institutional racism, certain racial groups may be denied rights or benefits, or get preferential treatment. Racial discrimination typically points out taxonomic differences between different groups of people, although anyone may be discriminated against on an ethnic or cultural basis, independently of their somatic differences. (This stuff is from wikipedia.)Well, I read the Straits Times, and there was a report about 3 Chinese youths, aged 17 to 18, participating actively in a Facebook group which is named after a derogatory term to describe Indians. They posted racist remarks on the Facebook group and are now arrested and on bail.I find them kind of... stupid. I do not understand why some of the youths nowadays are so racist. The multi-racial society that Singapore has preserved since quite a long time ago, was achieved through much bloodshed, our ancestors endured racial riots in 1964, 36 people were killed during the racial riots and 556 people wounded. The Malays and Chinese would brutally kill each other. This served as a lesson for the people during those dark times, and they learned how important racial harmony was. So, I strongly disapprove of the Chinese boys actions. They should feel ashamed of themselves for commtting such atrocities. Well, I feel that the court should punish the boys more severely because this is a serious matter. Well, what are your thoughts? Do you think the court should punish the boys more severely or let them of and give lighter punishment? Please comment.
